Jamo Subwoofer Works For Seconds And Turn Off

After what seems like an eternity of owning a Yamaha RX-V457 amp, must be 8 months, I have finally bought some Jamo A102 HCS 5 5.1 Speakers to actually use the thing. (It was given to me as a hand me down from a mate.)Firstly, I was a bit peed off to find no speaker cable included so I got a 15m roll of Belkin PureAV 16 gauge cable with 4 pairs of banana plugs included.

Before I do anything else, I could do with checking your thoughts on that, so is it ok? Not opened it yet.Now then, if the speaker cable is ok, i'll go about working out the lengths I need for the 5 surround speakers, which I am one banana plug short for, I should add! How to install a powered subwoofer Video Transcript. Do I have to run a Rockville 10' amplified sub off the rear speakers or can I run it directly off the stereo unit, I just don't want to run it off the rear speaker wire. Joshua, The auto turn-on mode of that powered sub works when using the high-level inputs. For those, you don't. It's a bit of a misconception that a sub has a volume knob, it's really an input level compensator. If your sub keeps turning off in auto mode it's trying to tell you the input isn't set high enough (unless it's developed a fault). So turn the output on the amp up a bit more and the sub gain down and see how you get on.

I guess i'll just use the Centre speaker without one for now?The Subwoofer is confusing me though. A sub cable was included, but it's a singular connection at both ends, yet the sub has a Left & Right Line In on it. The manual appears to suggest I just use the Left socket, is that right? Thanks.

The sub only needs one connection and the left one will be fine (can be left or right as no real difference). So just connection from the sub output on the reciever to the left input on the sub.The cable is a little thin although will probably be OK for satelite use.

16 guage is 1.3mm (assuming comversion program is correct). The normal recommendation would be to go for 2.5mm (13 guage or above). This can be bought for £1 per metre or less.As far a banana plugs go there are some that would never use them due to in theory bare wire connections being better. Personally I would use the banana plugs for all the connections to the rear of the amp. This is because space can be tight at the back of the amp and banana plugs can make it easier to connect them all in.

Just back to the speaker cable part, I found this chart:Now I have 16 Gauge cable and the Jamo speakers are 6 ohm. Now for the speaker, the right side, which is furthest away in cable length, about 7.5m or 24ft, then the chart is saying 36ft max so no issue there. The rest of the speakers are much shorter runs though. The centre is going to be 1.5m or 5ft, the 2x Fronts are 2.5m or 8.2ft and the left side is going to be about 4.5m or 15ft. Is it a problem using 16 gauge cable on shorter runs?EDIT: 15m or 49ft isn't going to be enough cable anyway, so I think i'll get a 7.5m roll of the same Belkin PureAV 16 gauge cable and use that for the furthest away speaker. Then I can pretty much make sure the rest are just the right lengths to make the best out of the cable! I have no idea why they have included (probably because people have 2 inputs so want to use them so phone up customer services asking why they have not got one hence easier to include it or maybe it is a cheap addition that make people feel they are getting a good deal, i.e.

We throw this bit in too, so they sell more!!).You will do no damage with it in or out. The only thing will be that you may need to change the gain with it in or out due to the amp on the sub getting 2 or 1 signal. I would just leave it off. What gains do you think you will get by giving the same signal twice? If you had stereo sub inputs then you connect them both so you get the full sub experience. Your AVR only outputs a mono sub signal so just use one connection i.e.

Keep it mono into the sub. Does the amp have an auto set up facility with mic included. If so then I would use this to start and see how it sounds. Just need to check the crossover settings etc. Once done to ensure they look sensible considering the frequency response of the speakers. If you want to do it manually you can do it by ear (so use test tones and set each speaker so they sound the same volume from your viewing seat) or you can get an SPL meter (An RS analogue model can bought for under £20). You can then tweak from there to suit your personal taste. No I do not have the Jamo speakers. With no auto set up you just need to measure the distance from each speaker to the listening position and enter these into the distance bit of the set up.

Then play the test tones and adjust the levels so they all sound the same. Set the volume dial (gain) on the sub to about 50% and take care as the sub often sounds quieter on the test tones but can be overpowering in movies. Hence a bit of trial and error may be needed to get it set just right. For the crossover setting take the lower frequency response of the speakers and then add a little. Prior to calibrating your amp and the speakers: set the sub's gain to mid way and its onboard crossover to max. Set phase to 0º.On the amp: set all speakers as being SMALL and use a crossover of 150Hz for all the speakers. Run the Auto Calibration of the amp f it has such a feature.

If you don't have an Auto Calibration option then use what I've said as much as you can to set the speakers and sub up.Note that if you've a Yamaha AV amp with a global crossover setting then you'll not have a 150Hz crossover option. Use the nearest possible setting to 150Hz.
